The Agence française de Développement (AFD)
The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) funds, supports and accelerates the transitions to a fairer and more sustainable world. The AFD focuses on climate, biodiversity, peace, education, urban development, health and governance.
The regional office of the Agence française de Développement (AFD) for Southern Africa, based in Johannesburg, covers AFD’s activities in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
AFD’s partners in Southern Africa include local and national governments, financial institutions, banks, state-owned enterprises, universities and research institutions. Around half of AFD’s projects are co-financed with partners, which is essential to implement its mandate to achieve sustainable delivery of public services, preserve and manage natural resources, promote the transition to low-carbon economies and foster social inclusion.
AFD made an active move in 2018 to explore areas of engagement in Zimbabwe. AFD offers technical assistance and financing support to development partners in Zimbabwe, to promote optimization of the agricultural sector, as well as biodiversity in the country.
Agricultural and biodiversity issues are two priority areas for AFD’s intervention through:
Support to non-governemental organizations and public utilities in the agricultural and water and sanitation sectors.
Support to regional projects as the SWM (Sustainable Wildlife Management) program launched in December 2019 (total budget of €11M including €5M from AFD). In partnership with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), AFD will support the Kavango-Zambezi Transboundary Conservation Area for Wildlife Management (KAZA ACT) and promote community-based management models for these conservation areas. AFD will support FAO and SWM to promote community-based management models for the Kavango-Zambezi Transboundary Conservation Area for Wildlife Management (KAZA ACT) conservation areas.
Support to State-owned Enterprises (SOE) and Parastatals through the €500,000 Feasibility and capacity-building fund signed with the Ministry of Finance of Zimbabwe.
Furthermore AFD is looking to develop a non-sovereign investment portfolio in Zimbabwe through loans, guarantees and technical assistance to local public and private companies, and financial institutions.
